Academic Team Lengas exposed to music ear Now Peshtigo senior aims for a career in the field BY SARA BOYD sboyd greenbaypressgazette.com May Print this page E mail this article Share this article Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine What s this PESHTIGO Senior Matt Lengas started listening to Mozart before he was born. While pregnant with Lengas Julie Jensen would play the classical compositions plug in a set of headphones and place them directly on her belly. I did that with all of our kids she said. He s the only one that really got into the music that much. Now years later Lengas still considers Mozart to be his favorite composer! and it seems the introduction to the world renowned musician must have struck a chord. Lengas a senior at Peshtigo High School has loved classical music since fifth grade when he first started playing the oboe. Now the valedictorian has hopes of becoming a professional oboe performer a dream he s held since middle school. His father Dave Lengas remembers the first time his son played with the Green Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra in the seventh grade. Afterwards he came up with a big grin on his face and he said That s what I want to do when I grow up he said. Nearly three hours of oboe practice a day while maintaining a perfect grade point average and juggling a handful of community activities has earned Lengas a spot on the Green Bay Press Gazette s Academic Team. Since picking up the oboe Lengas has rarely had a chance or desire to put it down. Lengas has performed with the Green Bay Civic Symphony and spent two summers at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp. It s extrem! ely intense Lengas said. But it gives you confidence when you get home because you know you ve gone through it and you ve survived. In fall Lengas will attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester N.Y. one of the nation s top music schools where he will pursue a degree in oboe performance. Everybody else even the students around you are playing at such a high level that it brings you up and keeps you working hard he said. I hope not to stagnate at all and keep learning. Lengas ability to be accepted into Eastman says a lot about his talent said Andrea Gross Hixon his private oboe instructor. He is far beyond his years as far as his musical abilities and the drive he has to excel in the oboe she said. He s probably going to be the biggest standout student I ll teach throughout my entire career. Jensen said she has been proud of the hard work and dedication her son has shown throughout the years. He s really had to work hard for it and give up a lot of things she said. When I hear him play it s really emotional. It s so beautiful. You re real! ly proud of him.
