New Health boss dismantles Fongs empire ABC via Yahoo7 News

The Acting head of the Health Department has ordered a review into the controversial use of expensive external consultants engaged by his predecessor Neale Fong. Peter Flett took over as the Acting Director General of Health almost a fortnight ago after Dr Fong was forced to resign amid misconduct allegations. In his first interview since taking on the role Dr Flett has told the ABC he plans to close the Subiaco offices set up by Dr Fong which were fitted out at a cost of about . Dr Flett also says a review into contracts awarded to external consultants worth millions of dollars will start next week and will take up to a month. I intend to review the use of consultants within the Department he said. We will retain contractors if they deliver the services in a cost efficient manner and are able to have skills that we don t have in house. My plans are to move the Director General s office back to the Department of Health offices at East Perth now we are going to have to go thr! ough some issues of leases and so forth but we are definitely moving. Fresh approach The Health Minister Jim McGinty supports the review saying it is time for a fresh approach in health administration. Contracts will end unless there is very strong justification for those consultancies to continue he said. At the time I think that Neale Fong did the right thing it s now a different era. I always think that it s best to have public servants doing public servants jobs. What I m pleased about is that the Health Department has continued on not missed a beat. Their focus is now even more looking after the key issues in hospitals today which is emergency departments it s making sure that we look after patients. I m hoping that we can now move onto a new era with a far more service oriented approach within health as a result of Peter Flett s appointment.
